Magnus at the Fire by Jennifer Armstrong

Magnus, Sparks and Billy pull the big steam pumper at the Broadway Firehouse, but when the fire chief buys a motorized engine, the grand, powerful horses are put out to pasture. Magnus has spent his life as a fire horse, though, and he can't shake years of training and dedication. When the alarm rings, Magnus jumps the fence and follows the smell of the smoke. A big beautiful picture book with wonderful bold illustrations by Owen Smith.

Book of the Week

Shanghai Girls: A Novel by Lisa See

Absolutely riveting storytelling from Lisa See. In 1937, two beautiful sisters who work as calendar girls in Shanghai are sold as wives to overseas Chinese men when their father loses the family fortune. Full of historical detail, this story is as much about the bonds of sisterhood as it is about the Asian-American immigrant experience.
